Don’t ever forget the people that helped to get you where you are.
At one point I was contemplating a tattoo that said “self made” It’s a nice thought to think that I’m self-made, but it’s incredibly inaccurate. Yes, I have endured hardship but I have had a lot of help along the way. I’m not necessarily talking about financial help. I’m talking about things like knowledge, wisdom, and encouragement!
The people that believed in me and — more importantly — helped me believe in myself are just as responsible for my current well-being as I am. I remember some of the most influential individuals in my development as a person and professional were those that gave me the self-confidence to take action, go into business, or go outside my comfort zone to achieve my goals. The manager at the bar I worked at during Grad School — I couldn’t be where I am today without giving me those shifts that helped me pay bills and have the time to study. Or my very first landscaping customer that overpaid me so that I could go buy better equipment. My good friend that taught me accounting for the first time when he was in town between semesters.
Today my message is to take the time to let those individuals know how appreciative you are for that. And be specific with your gratitude. Tell them HOW their words or actions impacted you on your journey and give them credit for their role in your successes. As much as we would like to admit to being self made, the reality is that few (if any) of us are.
